Flower and Bird Market
Chinese people have always loved pet birds, and especially nowadays, since they bring a bit of nature into the apartment complexes of modern China. Bird lovers often take their birds out to give them fresh air, hanging their cages from tree branches along parks and tree-lined boulevards, while they sit, chat, read newspapers, or admire the other pet birds out for the day. The best way to see this scene of Chinese life is to visit the local bird and flower market, an informal outdoor market where the vendors sell birds, feed, cages, and other sundry bird items, and mix and chat with the local bird lovers. It is also a great place to buy potted or cut flowers. Many local people often stroll through the bird and flower market, to enjoy the twitter of the many birds and the sight of clumps of fresh flowers. Nanjing's bird and flower market is a good one to visit, which is located close to the downtown. An old canal winds through the market; its water is thick with huge lotus leaves.

Chaotian Gong
The Antique Market at Chaotian Gong in central Nanjing is a great place to poke around and maybe stumble across some odd treasures. Although many vendors come to the market every day, the market is busiest on Saturday mornings when many private collectors, dealers, and vendors come from the towns around Nanjing and even from neighboring provinces to display their goods. The market is built in the forecourt of a Ming Dynasty Confucius temple - the carved entrance gate, red painted walls and ancient flagstones make a fitting setting for this fascinating market. While you might stumble on any sort of curiosity at the market, especially on Saturdays, some types of antiques are more common. Small carved jades, old woodcarvings, and porcelain are easy to be found, mixed among all sorts of other oddities and curios, ranging from old military medals to bronze incense burners to jade pipes. Of course, some of the items are fakes of varying degrees of quality, but it is still a fun place to explore. The Chaotian Gong Temple itself is well worth visiting. With a large complex of imperial buildings, it was constructed as a school where the children of local notables would learn the court rituals and Confucian ethics. While the historic buildings alone are interesting, today they house the Nanjing City Museum, with a collection of historic artifacts and exhibits explaining Nanjing's rich and many-layered history.
