Peruvian authorities have agreed to a request by China to airlift 20 stranded Chinese Taiwan tourists from Machu Picchu after torrential rains and mudslides closed the historic city over the weekend, embassy sources said Wednesday. The request came after the Chinese Foreign Ministry received an emergency call from the leader of a Taiwan tourism agency who appealed for help via the Chinese embassy in Lima.

In view of the challenge of climate change and China's growing energy demand, WWF initiated a low carbon city program in Shanghai and north China's Baoding in early 2008. Shanghai's actions correspond with China's latest commitment to a greener energy pathway. China announced on November 25 it intends to limit its greenhouse gas emissions per unit of economic output by 40 to 45 percent by 2020.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways, reveiled SpaceShipTwo, after two years of secret development in the Mojave Desert. The spacecraft is about the size of a large business jets, with wide windows and seats for six well-heeled passengers to take a thrill ride into space. It is billed as the world's first commercial spaceship. The company plans to sell suborbital space rides for $200,000 a ticket, offering passengers 2-hour flights that include about five minutes of weightlessness.

A recent market study of more than 24,000 people was conducted in the UK. Thailand was the most popular destination with the British, scooping 25 percent of the vote. The United States wooed 11 percent of British respondents, but France came last, scoring a miserable two percent.

China's State Council, the Cabinet, announced plans to push forward the development of the tourism industry and make it a strategic pillar industry in the national economy. The government called for improved service and management in the tourism sector, which consumes fewer resources and generates more job opportunities, according to a statement released after a State Council executive meeting, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.

October 26, 2009 About 10 million tourists came to visit Shandong, the host of the Chinese National Games, from the official opening till Sunday, according to the statistics from the Shandong Tourism Bureau. The 11th Chinese National Games will last until Oct. 28.
October 22, 2009 As of Oct 20, the total number of tourists to Taiwan from the mainland reached over 500,000 from July 18, 2008 when mainland tourists were permitted to visit the island. Lai said the number may increase to 600,000 by the end of this year.

July 24, 2009 Shanghai might organize local residents to provide homestays during the 2010 World Expo, a tourism official said Tuesday. New regulations allow tourism bureaus to work with township, government and urban communities to offer homestays during important holidays, sports events and exhibitions, said Dao Shuming, head of the Shanghai Tourism Bueau. Shanghai had 6.4 million overseas visitors last year, and the tourism industry was valued at 206 billion yuan (US$30 billion).
May 16, 2009 The flow of outbound tourists has almost come to a halt because people are afraid of contracting the A(H1N1) flu virus during travel. "Tours to almost all overseas destinations have seen a big drop, though many of these places have not reported even a single case of H1N1 infection," Zhang Qingzhu, marketing manager of China Comfortable Travel Services, said in Beijing on Friday.
May 13, 2009 Two lucky pandas in Chengdu now have their new superstar "father". Hong Kong movie star Jackie Chan on May 12, 2009 adopted two giant pandas at Chengdu Giant Panda Research and Breeding Base, located in the Sichuan Province capital. The male panda was then named "Cheng Cheng", the female "Long Long" after Jackie Chan's Chinese name. Meanwhile, Chan was appointed "Chengdu Panda Ambassador" by the local tourism authorities.
April 6, 2009 The tourist destination of Jeju may play a bigger role for advancing cultural exchanges between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK). Jeju, a tourist destination, has formed a sistership with China's Hainan province, an island also known for its tourist destinations.
March 3, 2009 Mexico City's Tourism Secretary Alejandro Rojas said on Thursday he had proposed the Federal Government to abolish the visas for Chinese tourists. The measure would help attract more Chinese travelers to the country,  Rojas said while addressing the opening of the first China-Mexico International Conference of Tourism.
