The province of Jiangsu has been called the “country of fish and rice” and the “land of rivers and lakes.” It is located on China’s east coast; situated from longitude 116°18' to 121°57' and between latitudes 30°45' and 35°20'. Jiangsu shares borders with Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Shanghai. It has a population of almost 80 million and occupies an area of 102,600 km². There are numerous water bodies within Jiangsu including the mighty Yangtze River; China’s ancient engineering marvel, the Great Canal; a long Yellow Sea coastline; a vast network of working canals; and many large freshwater lakes. Mountains and hills dot the scenery in north and southeast Jiangsu. An extensive and fertile plain crosses through the centre of the province.

  • Suzhou (SZ): China’s Garden Classic; famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Listed Chinese classic gardens
  • Wuxi (WX): The Brightest Pearl of Lake Tai; famous for its waterfront gardens, colorful dolls, and Yixing purple-clay teapots
  • Changzhou (CZ): A Heavenly Place; famous for its Tianning Temple and Pagoda, Heavenly Eyes Lake, and Dinosaur Museum
  • Zhenjiang (ZJ): The Home of Sweet & Sour; famous for its vinegar, sweet love stories, and temples
  • Nanjing (NJ): The Capital City of Six Dynasties;famous for its bridges across the mighty Yangtze River, the Mausoleum of Sun Yat-sen, and Ming Tomb
  • Yangzhou (YZ): The Renaissance City;famous for its exquisite craft-making, Slender West Lake, and as location where Marco Polo and Pearl Buck lived
  • Huai’an (HA): The Hometown of Zhou Enlai, famous as the home of the first Prime Minister of the Peoples Republic of China
  • Suqian (SQ): The Spirit of Jiangsu; famous for Yanghe and Shuanggou brands of white Chinese liquor
  • Xuzhou (XZ): The Other Terracotta Warriors;famous the archaeology and history of the Han Dynasty including a fabulous terracotta warrior discovery
  • Lianyungang (LYG): LYG by the Sea; famous as a seacoast resort and as the setting for the story of the Monkey King in Journey to the West (Xi You Ji)
  • Yancheng (YC): Longest Deer Trail in the World; famous for its preserves for Pere David’s Deer and Red-Crowned Cranes
  • Taizhou (TZ): Cradle of Great Chinese Statesmen; famous as the hometown of Hu Jintao, Premier of the People’s republic of China and Mei Lan Fan, the most respected performer of Chinese opera
  • Nantong (NT): The Fabric of China; famous as a city of textiles, seaside destination at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze, and the home of the first museum in China
