Jiangsu is one of the provinces of China, which contains 106 county-level divisions and 13 prefecture-level cities.
Size and Distribution
Jiangsu has a population of about 80 million. The population density is 700 people per km2 ranking the first in China. However, the density is higher in southern Jiangsu than in the north of Jiangsu.
Mortality and Life Expectancy
In 1990, the average life expectancy of the Jiangsu population was 72.87. The average life expectancy of a male was 70.39 and that of a female was 75.40. According to the complete life table in 1990, the average life expectancy of Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou and Nantong was higher than that of Xuzhou, Huai’an, Yancheng and Lianyungang.
Marriage Status, Family Size and Type
In 1997, 14.6 percent of the adult population was unmarried, while 77.6 percent was married. Since 1949, the number of households has continuously increased. Currently, the family size is reducing. In 1980, the family size was 4.03, but in 1997, it was 3.34. In 1990, the proportions of families with one generation, two generations and three generations were 16.02 percent, 64.59 percent and 18.56 percent, respectively.
Birth Rate and Family Planning Rate
From 1949 to the end of the 1960s, the birth rate was usually above 30 percent. After 1971, following the national one-child policy, the population growth decreased gradually.
Level of People’s Education
The population with higher educational certification in 1990 was 1.56 times more than that in 1982. In 1990, the rate of illiteracy decreased from 22.74 percent to 11.05 percent, compared with 1982.

Zhu Yunming
Born in Wuxian, Jiangsu, Zhu Yunming (1460-1526) was a member of the Wumen School in Suzhou. He is especially famous for his running style of calligraphy.
Tang Yin
Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, Tang Yin (1470-1523) was titled as “Fengliu Caizi ” (romantic scholar). He was a talented and well-known painter and poet in the Ming Dynasty.
Wen Zhen’ming
As the painter of the imperial Art Academy of the Ming Dynasty, Wen Zhen'ming (1470-1559), was a native of Wu country, Jiangsu and his sobriquet was Ting Yun Sheng.
Xu Zhengqing
Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, Xu Zhenqing (1479-1511) was a well-known literate in Ming Dynasty. He was talented in poetry and released his first album “Xin Qian Ji” at the age of 16. In the Poem Circle of Ming Dynasty, he played an important role.
Zhu Ziqing
As an outstanding critic and scholar, Zhu Ziqing was famous for his poems and essays during the period following the May Fourth Movement.
Hua Luogeng
Born in Jintan County of Jiangsu in 1910, Hua Luogeng was a famous Chinese mathematician, educator and social activist.
Ye Shengtao
Ye Shengtao (1894-1988) was a prominent author, educator and publisher.
