of the best places for families with children
traveling in the province:
Museums in
Jiangsu
Are your kids curious about ancient and
modern Chinese culture? Give them invaluable
priceless experience with a visit to some
of the many excellent museums in Jiangsu.
Nanjing Museum is
widely considered to be one of the finest
and largest museums in China. It has a truly
superb collection of top quality cultural
and artistic treasures. They are well presented
in a modern setting, with labels and explanations
in English! When Nanjing was the capital
of China before 1949, this was the National
Museum, many treasures from around the country
were collected here. This is a must see
attraction for visitors!
Nanjing Folk Customs Museum
is located conveniently near one of Nanjing's
main historic zones and shopping bazaars,
the Fuzimiao area. The halls of the mansion
have been converted into period rooms illustrating
the different facets of life in traditional
China. A very special household Buddhist
shrine, which might interest you, is a small
schoolroom where family children would be
trained in the canonical Confucian texts.
Formal reception rooms, and a traditional
kitchens are all part of the attraction.
Other rooms display the paraphernalia for
events like weddings, funerals, and festivals.
One of the most magnificent items is a lavishly
decorated sedan chair used to carry the
new bride to her new home, completely covered
in intricate carvings.
Water
Towns in Jiangsu
Water towns are places where tourists and
visitors can see very authentic lifestyles
of Chinese people, especially those who
live in southeast China. Kids will be curious
about the living habits, handmade arts and
crafts and many other things happening here.
Zhouzhuang is affectionately
known as the "Number One Water Town"
for tourism,Its combination of charming
bridges, enchanting narrow alleys, well
preserved historic homes, and an array of
small museums undeniably earn that moniker.
Visitors to Zhouzhuang can spend the night
in a restored mansion, eat in traditional
restaurants, see performances of local opera,
and watch craftsmen shape local handicrafts,
as they have for centuries. These amenities,
combined with its unique charm and historic
atmosphere make Zhouzhuang a memorable way
to experience Jiangsu and the water towns
of a China of centuries ago.
Tongli is another charming
and historic water town outside Suzhou.
It is located fairly close to Zhouzhuang,
making it easy to visit and tour both in
a day. Although they have many similar features,
each has its own distinct personality, and
offer unique tourism experiences. Many tourists
feel that seeing both gives a new perspective
on what makes each place so special.
There are several ways to experience the
charming atmosphere and traditional rhythms
of life in the water towns. A great place
to take a break from your sightseeing is
the historic Nanyuan Teahouse set alongside
the banks of the Grand Canal. Tea is served
in the traditional style, and sometimes
troupes of local musicians perform traditional
music.
If you have more time, several historic
houses around the town have been converted
into small inns serving tourists. Instead
of staying at a hotel outside of the historic
center, many visitors prefer the more memorable
experience of staying in these homes. Each
inn is run by a local family and their quality
and cleanliness are certified by the local
tourist board. You can enjoy home-cooked
meals and try the authentic family-style
dishes of the region. Best of all, you can
experience the atmosphere of Tongli at your
own pace. Watching the waters of the canals
turn reddish orange as the sun sinks over
the horizon, or seeing the town slowly come
to life again in the mists of morning are
truly unique vacation experiences. For more
